Addiction & Recovery Counseling
Understand the Patterns Behind Your Drinking, Using, or Behaviors – and Find a Path That’s Truly Yours
Maybe you’ve started to notice that something you once had a handle on now seems to have a hold on you.
Perhaps you’ve tried to cut back, set rules, or quit altogether – and it works for a while, until it doesn’t. The promises you make to yourself keep slipping away, and the shame that follows only makes the cycle harder to break.
Or maybe you’re not even sure you’d call it “addiction.” You just know that alcohol, cannabis, other substances, or certain behaviors have started taking up more space than you want them to – affecting your relationships, your sleep, your motivation, your sense of who you are.
Cannabis can be especially easy to overlook. Because it’s legal, widely used, and often seen as harmless, it’s common to assume daily use couldn’t be a problem – even when it’s quietly become the thing you can’t get through a day without.
If you’re like many of the clients who come to us for help, you may find yourself asking questions like:
- “Do I really have a problem, or am I overthinking this?”
- “It’s just weed – so why do I feel like I can’t function without it?”
- “Why can I stop for a while but never make it stick?”
- “Is the only option total abstinence, or is there another way?”
- “How did this become the thing I reach for when life gets hard?”
Sound familiar? If so, you’re far from alone.
So much of the conversation around addiction is loud, rigid, and one-size-fits-all. You may have been told there’s only one right way to recover, or felt judged the moment you admitted you were struggling. That kind of pressure rarely creates lasting change – it usually just adds more shame to an already heavy load.
Fortunately, there is another way forward.
At Humboldt Therapy, we help you understand your relationship with substances and behaviors from the inside out – with curiosity instead of judgment, and with respect for the fact that your path is yours to define.
If you’re ready to understand what’s really driving these patterns, contact us today to schedule a free, 15-minute phone consultation and find out whether our approach is right for you.
How Addiction & Recovery Counseling Can Help
Addiction rarely starts as the problem – it usually starts as a solution. A nightly drink, a few hits to unwind, a behavior that quiets anxiety, numbs pain, manages trauma, or simply gets you through the day. Over time, what once helped begins to cost more than it gives.
That’s why lasting change isn’t just about willpower or stopping a behavior. It’s about understanding what that behavior has been doing for you – and finding healthier, more sustainable ways to meet those same needs.
In counseling, we work together to:
- Make sense of your patterns without shame, so you can see your behaviors clearly and compassionately
- Explore the roots – the stress, trauma, grief, or unmet needs that fuel the cycle
- Clarify your goals, whether that’s abstinence, moderation, or simply understanding yourself better before you decide
- Build real coping skills so you have something to turn toward when the urge to use shows up
- Reconnect with what matters most to you, including questions of meaning, purpose, identity, and connection that often emerge during recovery
At Humboldt Therapy, we honor many paths. Some clients find a home in 12-step communities like AA; others thrive with moderation-based or harm-reduction approaches; many weave in spirituality, mindfulness, or a personal sense of purpose. There is no single “right” recovery – only the one that fits your life, your values, and your goals.

And for clients who are interested, we can make space for the deeper questions that recovery often raises: Who am I beyond this struggle? What matters most to me? How do I want to live? There is no required belief system – only an invitation to explore what gives your life meaning and direction.
We welcome clients from all backgrounds, including those who want to explore spirituality, meaning, purpose, values, or a deeper sense of connection as part of their recovery journey.

Is Outpatient Counseling the Right Level of Care for You?
Outpatient therapy is a powerful fit for many people – but not for everyone, and not at every stage of recovery. Part of our job is to be honest with you about that.
Our addiction and recovery counseling is best suited for people who are medically stable and safe to do this work in a weekly outpatient setting – for example, those who are exploring their relationship with substances or behaviors, building or maintaining recovery, working on the underlying issues that drive the cycle, or seeking support alongside other recovery resources.
Some situations call for a higher or more intensive level of care than weekly outpatient therapy can safely provide – such as needing medically supervised detox, experiencing severe withdrawal, requiring 24-hour support, or being in acute crisis. If that’s where you are right now, outpatient therapy isn’t the safest starting point – and we’ll tell you so directly, then help point you toward resources better matched to what you need.
This isn’t about turning anyone away. It’s about making sure you get the right care, at the right time, so your effort goes toward something that can actually help. During your free consultation, we’ll talk honestly about where you are and whether outpatient work is the right next step – or whether something more supportive would serve you better first.
Contact us today for a free, 15-minute consultation, and we’ll help you figure out the right path forward.
Do We Have the Best Recovery Therapist for You?
Finding the right therapist matters – especially when you’re doing the vulnerable work of looking honestly at addiction. You want someone who not only knows this terrain but also helps you feel safe, respected, and free of judgment.
We also know we’re all unique individuals. We come from different backgrounds, struggle in different ways, and take different paths toward healing and growth. Just as no single recovery framework works for everyone, no one clinician can be the best addiction recovery therapist for every client.
Fortunately, Humboldt Therapy is much more than just one therapist.
Our diverse, compassionate team brings a range of backgrounds, identities, and approaches – including clinicians with both clinical training and lived understanding of recovery. When you reach out, we’ll take the time to understand your needs and connect you with someone whose style fits you, whether you want structure and accountability, a gentle and attuned presence, or something in between.
